First Sunday of Lent —- Going into the Desert

The Gospel account for the First Sunday of Lent always deals with Jesus going into the desert — fasting and temptations.

In monastic circles, we speak of going into the desert as well. It involves a serious face to face encounter with self and with God.

There can be great productivity in going into the desert. One can come out renewed with new life and energy.

In the abbey of Mount Michael, there are reminders of the desert that we monks see every day— cacti. They can be a bit dangerous if one gets too close, but they can also be incredibly beautiful in their blooming time.

As we journey through Lent, do not be afraid to go into the desert. It is very possible that the experience can make you blossom into a beautiful new creation.
